It is difficult sometimes to evaluate someone's scientific accomplishments from a contemporary perspective. It is even more difficult for an individual to evaluate the contributions of a true friend and colleague. This is my case with Vladimir Vasileviche.
I cannot separate the science from the man. He was a pioneer at every turn and not always appreciated by his contemporaries. His thoughts were always far ahead of his time in anticipating what would become important for future radio science studies even though he and the Kazan group rarely had the equipment needed to fully utilize the ideas they produced. One of his foremost accomplishments was helping to organize and maintaining the Kazan meteor group against all odds. He was a pioneer in radar interferometric mapping of the whole sky in a search for the distribution and nature of meteor showers and microshowers, a technique that is still being used world-wide. The technological pinnacle of this concept has been the MU radar in Japan where my two Swedish associates, Csilla Szasz and Johan Kero have now perfected the computer technique to map the sky in unique ways and in the finest detail anywhere in the world, detail that Vladimir Vasileviche and the Kazan group could only dream about. My only sadness about this is that because of his health Vladimir Vasileviche could not participate in this work along with me as it serves as a modern vindication of his early efforts.
The real legacy that most scientists leave is not the papers they publish (as papers now go out of date almost as soon as they appear), but in the quality and quantity of students they produce. Vladimir Vasileviche himself may not have recognized this aspect of his life but I think his greatest accomplishments were in those he mentored and who have gone on to enrich the scientific heritage of Tatarstan, Russia, and indeed the world. He prepared the way for the future of physical science and engineering in Tatarstan and he did this with great humanity and style. Hardly a day goes by when I am doing meteor research work that I do not think of him. He was one of the finest scientists I have known and I hope he is regarded as such by the country he served.

Это как раз мой случай в отношении Владимира Василевича. Я не могу отделить науку от человека. Он был первооткрывателем на каждом шагу, и не всегда его современники отдавали ему должное. Его мысли всегда опережали время в предсказании того, что впоследствии становилось важным для будущих радиоисследований, даже при том, что его исследовательская группа имела крайне скромное оборудование. Одним из важнейших его достижений была организация передовых метеорных исследований в Казани. Он, без преувеличения, был основоположником в области метеорной радиолокации, изобретателем методик, которые до сих пор используется по всему миру. Я думаю, что самым большим его достижением являются те, чьим наставником он был и кто продолжает обогащать научное наследие России и всего мира. Он подготовил путь для будущего физической науки и техники в Татарстане, сделал это с огромным человеколюбием и стилем. Он был одним из самых прекрасных ученых, которых я знал. Надеюсь, что страна, которой он служил, оценит его, как он того заслуживает.
